Exam Tips

Going into the exam, you must ensure you do not take any electronic devices (phone, smart watch, iPads etc.) in with you.

Flight Performance and Planning Exam

In this exam, you can take a calculator into it, and will also need a 1:500,000 chart (ideally take both North and South UK). Additionally, you will be provided with a print-out of conversion factors, and can also take a CRP-1 Flight Computer into the exam.

Personally I did not know about the conversion print-out, and although I didn’t need to use it in my specific exam, it made it a lot easier! But if you can do it on the CRP-1 then even better, as I’ve been told that if you can master it now then it becomes helpful for future flight exams (e.g. ATPL exams).

Navigation Exam

For this exam, you can take a calculator, CRP-1 Flight Computer and get given a print-out of conversion factors, similar to Flight Performance and Planning. However, you do not use charts in this exam (confusingly!). So whilst a lot of the training material will have you identifying places using a lat/long and measuring distances/bearings and off-track lines, you won’t be required to do it for this exam.
